Northern Lights

Franklin Quartet

Explore Scandinavia in this program of rarely heard treasures for string quartet from the land of the midnight sun. Curated by the Franklin Quartet’s resident Finn, Marika Holmqvist, Northern Lights presents music by Haydn’s neighbors to the north, including Kraus, nicknamed ‘the Swedish Mozart’, and Wikmansson whose quartets where greatly admired by Haydn himself.

The Franklin Quartet performs music from the dawn of the string quartet on period instruments. Named after Age of Enlightenment polymath Benjamin Franklin, the group brings a spirit of invention and exploration to its presentation of early string quartet repertoire, in particular through its adherence to the historical practice of the upper string players switching parts. Individually, the members of the quartet possess extensive experience as specialists in historically informed performance practice, and are highly sought after as soloists, chamber musicians and orchestral leaders across the United States and abroad. Formed in 2016, the Franklin Quartet is based in Philadelphia, PA and proudly embraces its role as the city’s only period string quartet. http://www.franklinquartet.com/
