The Dryden Ensemble opens its new season with London: Purcell & Handel on Saturday, November 7 in Doylestown, PA, and Sunday, November 8 in Princton, NJ.
The program features soprano Julianne Baird in works by Henry Purcell, including Music for a While, Bid the Virtues, his madsong, Bess of Bedlam, The Queen’s Epicedium, an elegy for Queen Mary, and Sweeter than roses interspersed with theatrical airs and dances for the ensemble. Actor Paul Hecht will read from diaries of the period and narrate operatic scenes from Handel’s Teseo, 1713, with Ms. Baird singing arias for Medea, a wicked enchantress.
The members of the Dryden Ensemble include Jane McKinley, oboe; Vita Wallace and Theresa Salomon, violins; Alissa Smith, viola; Lisa Terry, violoncello; Daniel Swenberg, theorbo; and Webb Wiggins, harpsichord.
