The violoncello flourished relatively late in France, where the viola da gamba ruled well into the eighteenth century. This program celebrates the first generation of great cellists in France in sonatas by Jean Barrière, Martin Berteau, and Joseph Bodin de Boismortier.

Midtown Concerts sponsors lunchtime performances of music of the 18th century and earlier for anyone seeking a respite from the midtown hustle and bustle. Ensembles are chosen by a jury of early-music specialists from the metropolitan area.
