Narození Pána Krista: Christmas Music, 17th-Century Bohemia
Moravian Gothic Virgin and Child
The New York University F.A.S. Music Department and the Dvořák American Heritage Association present the viol consort The Teares of the Muses, soprano Kathleen Cantrell, and a vocal quartet from Ghostlight performing “Narození Pána Krista: Christmas Music, 17th-Century Bohemia.” The concert features the remarkable, but almost forgotten Czech composer Adam Václav Michna z Otradovic (c. 1600 - 1676). The program includes sacred music by Michna with Latin texts: Mass IV, a Magnificat, and motets that honor the Virgin Mary—Alma redemptoris Mater, and Salve Regina. Exquisite Advent and Christmas carols in Czech by Michna and Václav Holan Rovenský (some still sung today) have a simple chorale texture and homespun simplicity. The viol consort performs pieces by the Bohemian David Funck, and by Nicolai and Praetorius. Michael Beckerman, chair of the NYU Department of Music, is artistic advisor.
The Teares of the Muses is directed by first-chair player, Margaret Panofsky. Made up of proficient musicians from the N.Y.U. community, the consort often adds favorite guests. Kathleen Cantrell is the soprano soloist; she has performed with the Teares since 2007 when the consort’s residency began at St. Michael’s Church at West 99th Street in New York. The performers have made 17th-century German music a speciality, culminating in the CD, Ein Lämmlein. “These singers make repeated listening a real pleasure. The viol consort functions impressively as a single entity…. The uplifting quality belongs to a timeless season” Viola da Gamba Society of America Newsletter.
