Stradella’s San Giovanni Battista
Catapult Opera, one of New York’s newest and most exciting opera companies presents the United States stage premiere of Alessandro Stradella’s San Giovanni Battista in a co-production with Washington D.C.’s IN Series. The arresting oratorio from “one of the most innovative and exciting composers of the 17th century” (BBC), is directed by IN Series Artistic Director Timothy Nelson who sets the opera within 1970s suburbia — reimagining the biblical drama as a portrait of a society in decay and a family whose psychic rot is cracking through its perfect facade. The distressed 1857 church at The Space at Irondale offers a perfect backdrop and contrast to the sheen of America’s 1970s self-image, mirroring Stradella’s own contrast of the sacred and profane.
Performances are in Italian with English supertitles.
