Nothing Follows is a potent operatic double bill featuring Nico Muhly and Gregory Pierce’s The Glitch and Claudio Monteverdi’s Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda. The production helmed by Marcus Shields examines intimacy, conflict, and the thin line between love and violence. The Glitch, a one-act true-crime opera inspired by the 2015 Dannemora prison break, unfolds as a taut conversation between a former prison employee — now incarcerated for aiding her lover’s escape — and the husband who refuses to acknowledge her guilt. Their first encounter since her conviction exposes a landscape of jealousy, longing, and betrayal. Monteverdi’s Il Combattimento recounts the tragic clash between the Christian knight Tancredi and an armored Saracen warrior he fatally wounds, only to discover it’s Clorinda, the woman he loves. Her serene final request for baptism closes the tale in quiet transcendence. Composed nearly four centuries apart, both works distill a single charged moment when desire, misunderstanding, and fate collide — reflecting each other and the unresolved tensions of our own world.
