From the Parade Ground to Paris: A Portrait of Bernhard Crusell

Dominic Giardino ~ clarinet
Shelby Yamin ~ violin
Stephen Goist ~ viola
Matt Zucker ~ cello

Crusell’s life encapsulates the most important period in the popularization of the clarinet. From his lowly beginnings as the son of a bookbinder, Crusell’s fortunes were dramatically changed by the opportunity to serve as a military bandsman. This program showcases the works of Crusell and the teachers who shaped him: Franz Tausch and Jean-Xavier Lefevre.

Founded in 2023, Music of the Regiment (MotR) is an ensemble and network of researchers and musicians dedicated to the study and performance of 18th- and 19th-century European and American military music. MotR offers scholarly and musical programming that contextualizes the role of military music and musicians from the Age of Enlightenment through the American Civil War.
