A staple of chamber music in the late Classical and early Romantic era (circa 1780–1830) was the Italian Notturno for two voices with continuo or fully-composed keyboard part. This genre, a descendant of the Baroque chamber cantata, remains very little explored today; hundreds of gems await rediscovery. Teatro Nuovo’s concentration on early Romantic opera poises its musicians to lead this revival. Teatro Nuovo’s 1804 Lonsdale fortepiano (plus cello as appropriate) provides the ideal period accompaniment.
Teatro Nuovo was founded in 2018 with the mission of exploring new paths in the interpretation of classic Italian opera. It now fills a unique role on the operatic scene by taking the insights of the early music movement forward into the Romantic era. Critics and audiences alike have embraced the new initiative, with The Wall Street Journal speaking for many: “The effect is transformative.”
