Women and English Sociability ~ Sonatas for Keyboard with Violin Accompaniment
Patricia García-Gil ~ fortepiano
Cynthia Roberts ~ violin
This program explores the accompanied keyboard sonata as a social and musical form in late eighteenth-century Britain, bringing Mozart into dialogue with works by Maria Barthélemon, Jane Mary Guest, and Maria Hester Park. Moving between domestic music-making, public performance, teaching, publishing, and patronage, it traces the networks through which this repertoire circulated, and the crucial role women played within them. The flexible relationship between keyboard and violin becomes a lens for hearing music not as a fixed hierarchy, but as conversation.
Patricia García-Gil and Cynthia Roberts debuted together in May 2024 and have since performed widely. Cynthia is one of America’s leading Baroque violinists, appearing as soloist, concertmaster, and recitalist across North America, Europe, and Asia. Patricia, Artist-in-Residence and Postdoctoral Associate at Cornell, is an internationally-acclaimed keyboardist recognized for visionary programming, scholarship, and compelling, acclaimed performances.
