The Theater of Affects ~ A Narrative in Musical Gesture

Jimmy Drancsak ~ violin
Nuria Canales Rubio ~ flute
Allen Maracle ~ cello
Nathan Mondry ~ harpsichord

Telemann becomes the narrator of this tale of affects, weaving together the larger works. With his guidance, we embark on a journey through musical gesture, from the rhetoric of Hotteterre’s refined joyfulness to the Galant style. At the heart of this tale, Handel’s “wordless opera” transforms tragic motifs from Tamerlano into an instrumental dialogue. From this dramatic center, the journey unfolds into the gestural world of C.P.E. Bach’s Empfindsamkeit.

Founded in 2024 and dedicated to 18th-century French and German instrumental music, Passiones Animae draws its inspiration from the Cartesian concept of the “Passions of the Soul.” This flexible ensemble is defined by an approach where interpretive vulnerability and honesty shape the musical discourse. Passiones Animae’s goal is to convey the intensity of the affections in a way that is both genuine and accessible.
