Corelli in Chiquitos: Music from the Missions
In the mid-eighteenth century, Jesuit missionaries brought music by Corelli, Vivaldi, Locatelli, and others to their new missions in Chiquitos, southeastern Bolivia. Versions of these pieces survive today in the archives of the Chiquitanía, alongside anonymous sonatas and motets — some in the indigenous languages of the region. This program traces the arrival of European religious music and its transformation inside the church, and then turns to popular music outside the church with some of the surviving indigenous dances and songs of Peru.
