Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo (1607) in Relief of Los Angeles (2025)
For the Gonzaga 1607 cultural celebration, Striggio adopted the ancient Orpheus and Euridice story (from Plato), “humanizing” the tragic ending. Monteverdi’s great music allows the drama to process from the joyous wedding through the shades of the underworld as the hero Orpheus will not let his love die. The chorus comments and incorporates those who guide or detract him from his goals. Opinions differ as to the motive of the tragedy — our artists, however, are clear about their roles.
Performance is led by Richard Porterfield, with players of early instruments.
