Madrigal Madness is an ongoing project bringing together ARTEK's seasoned professionals with young artists in the preparation of a madrigal program - often featuring rarely heard madrigal gems.

For 2019, Program 1 will be the virtuosic madrigals for 2 & 3 voices by Luzzasco Luzzaschi (c.1545-1607) who wrote music for the famed Three Ladies of Ferrara. Clara Rottsolk, ARTEK soprano and vocal coach will join with participants Anastasia Black, Brooke Bryant, Emily Hughes, Abra Mueller, Addy Sterrett and ARTEK director Gwendolyn Toth to bring you a slice of Ferrara's fascinating court life.

Program 2 will be the virtually unknown Canzone de' Baci madrigal cycle of Salamone Rossi (c.1570-1630). Rossi was a colleague of Monteverdi at the Mantuan court, and like his colleague, Rossi's madrigals were masterpieces of expressive text-painting. The cycle consists of eight 5-part madrigals set to poems by Giambattista Marino on courtly love and kisses. Barbara Hanning, musicologist, will be on hand to give us her insight into the historical and poetic context of each madrigal. ARTEK singers and coaches Barbara Hollinshead, Andrew Fuchs, and Peter Becker will join with participants Tracy Cowart, Garrett Eucker, Barbara Hill, Bradley King, Jonathan May, Brian Mummert, and Brianna Robinson.
