Back by popular demand - ARTEK reprises its madcap theatrical take on Monteverdi's famous lament "Lasciatemi morire" from the lost opera Arianna with our fabulous madrigal singers (Laurie Heimes, Barbara Hollinshead, Ryland Angel, Philip Anderson, and Peter Becker) and the magnificent Queen Ariadne herself (Sarah Chalfy). The show was a total hit last spring. Don't miss this second chance to hear beautiful madrigals, haunting solos, and the enchanting story of Ariadne.

The show will be performed as a one-act cabaret set without intermission, approximately 75 minutes. Complimentary wine will be served.

ARTEK's holiday extravaganza will be the seasonal highlight of 2017! ARTEK has been performing the music of 17th-century German composer Johann Rosenmueller since 2011, when the ensemble's brilliant recording of his cantatas was released. ARTEK performed his Vespers for the first time in 2012 to enormous acclaim. Rosenmueller's music combines the grand Venetian style of Monteverdi's Vespers with the monumental German style of sacred music leading up to Bach's B-minor Mass. 8 outstanding singers (Laurie Heimes, Clara Rottsolk, Barbara Hollinshead, Ryland Angel, Andrew Fuchs, Philip Anderson, Andrew Padgett, and Peter Becker) will be joined by ARTEK's string ensemble led by violinist Cynthia Freivogel, international wind players from Les Sacqueboutiers de Toulouse and American wind specialists, and ARTEK's renowned continuo team.

The concert will be performed in the marvelous acoustics of Old Saint Patrick's Cathedral, a gem of a venue located in downtown Manhattan.

The three B's of German baroque music! ARTEK will present a program of North German cantatas, chamber music, and organ music. Soloists Cynthia Freivogel, violin; Andrew Fuchs, tenor; and Peter Becker, bass-baritone will be joined by Gwendolyn Toth, organ; Vita Wallace, violin; Motomi Igarashi, viola da gamba; and Daniel Swenberg, theorbo. If you enjoyed ARTEK's Biber program last May, you will enjoy this program journeying from the stylus fantasticus music of Nicolaus Bruhns and Dietrich Buxtehude to the sublime harmonies of the immortal Johann Sebastian Bach.

The program includes the complete cantatas Jauchzet dem Herren (featuring Mr. Fuchs) and Mein Herz ist bereit (featuring Mr. Becker) by Nicolaus Bruhns; the duet “O wie selig” BuxWV 90 and the Sonata in C major BuxWV 266 by Dietrich Buxtehude; the Sonata in G minor for solo violin, BWV 1001 and the duet “Ein unbegreiflich” from Cantata #125, by Johann Sebastian Bach. Additionally, Ms. Toth will play the solo organ works “Grosses” Praeludium in E minor of Bruhns and the Praeludium and Fugue in B minor BWV 544 by Bach.

LIGHT AND SHADOW: ARTEMISIA GENTILESCHI

ARTEK presents an innovative new theatrical show based on the life and art of 17th-century painter Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-c.1656). Conceived as a one-woman show, Artemisia: Light and Shadow stars Sarah Chalfy as Artemisia, who will sing 17th-century music by Barbara Strozzi (1619-1676), from op. 2, 7, and 8; and Francesco Cavalli (1602-1676), from his opera Artemisia. The show will combine dramatic arias with staged scenes, written by Nahma Sandrow. Music director and accompanist on harpsichord is ARTEK director Gwendolyn Toth. The stage director is Paul Peers; lighting designer is Chenault Spence; and the costume designer is Carol Sherry.

The narrative of the production covers Artemisia Gentileschi’s major life events: her father’s training in painting; the sensational rape and subsequent trial including torture when she was a teenager; her marriage of convenience; her great love affair with a Florentine nobleman (based on letters only discovered in 2011), and her triumphs as an artist, with visuals of her paintings.

Artemisia: Light and Shadow will take place at The Siggy, a 48-seat Off-Off-Broadway theater space at the Flea Theater in Tribeca, New York City. The performances will be fully-staged, with costumes, lighting, and multi-media visuals, and will last approximately one hour.

Madrigal Madness

Madrigal Madness at the Flea Theater on Wednesday, May 16 at 7:30 pm features ARTEK’s early music stars with young artist guests. The ARTEK performers will be Ryland Angel, countertenor/tenor; Andrew Fuchs, tenor; and Peter Becker, bass-baritone. Young artists will be announced on April 17th; they will be selected competitively from over forty applications from up and coming young singers. The program will be madrigals by Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) from Books 2 and 3. Musicologist Barbara Hanning will speak to the audience about the historical context and poetry of these madrigals, most of which are still rarely heard despite the recent popularity of Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 and of many of his later madrigals.

This concert is part of a new ARTEK initiative called the Madrigal Academy, in which ARTEK’s seasoned performers work with emerging artists to delve deeper into the neglected Italian madrigal repertory. ARTEK will continue to present Madrigal Madness performances on an ongoing basis, seeking to perform in unusual venues in the five boroughs and with a desire to develop an informal concert format that will appeal to younger audiences.

Lute Lunacy

Lute Lunacy at the Flea Theater on Friday, May 18 at 7:30 pm features one of ARTEK’s core members, lutenist Daniel Swenberg, in a joint concert with Arash Noori, a young lutenist who made his debut with ARTEK in December 2017. Mr. Swenberg is on the faculty of the Juilliard School, and is one of America’s top lutenists performing with the Metropolitan Opera, Carmel Bach Festival, Opera Atelier/Tafelmusik Handel and Haydn Society and many others in addition to ARTEK. He will play 17th-century lute music from France by Robert De Visée (c. 1655-1732/33), Jacques Gallot (c.1625-c.1695), and François Dufault (before 1604-c.1722). Arash Noori studies lute and theorbo with Daniel Swenberg. He holds previous degrees from Yale University and the University of Toronto, and been a prizewinner in international competitions. He will play Italian 17th-century theorbo music by Giovanni Girolamo Kapsberger (c.1580-1651). The performance will take place at The Siggy, a performance space at the Flea Theater in Tribeca, New York City and will last approximately 70 minutes with a brief intermission.
