Instrumental Music for Dance in the Medieval Time

Satono Norizuki and Pat NeelyIn this concert, Satono Norizuki and Patricia-Ann Neely explore dance music from Codex Faenza 117 and London Manuscript (MS Add.29987) in the fourteenth and the fifteenth century. The Medieval instrumental duo perform on the vielle (a bowed stringed instrument) and the clavisimbalum (a plucked keyboard instrument in the fifteenth century) plays the various types of late medieval dance music in Europe.

SATONO NORIZUKI, an early keyboardist (harpsichord, clavisimbalum, clavichord, and organ), has performed frequently as a soloist and a basso continuo player in North America, Europe, and her native country Japan. She has performed in numerous festivals such as Boston Early Music Festival, Madison Early Music Festival, and Chamber Music Festival at Stony Brook University. Satono received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in harpsichord performance from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where she studied with Arthur Haas. She completed Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in harpsichord performance from the Conservatory of the Chicago College of Performing Arts, Roosevelt University, with David Schrader, and was inducted into the Franklin Honor Society. PATRICIA ANN NEELY (viola da gamba, violone) has appeared with many early music ensembles including, the Folger Consort, Smithsonian Chamber Players, the New York Collegium, the Washington Bach Consort, Amor Artis, Glimmerglass Opera, New York City Opera, the Boston Camerata, Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra, The Newberry Consort, Bach Vespers at Holy Trinity, The New York Consort of Viols, and Early Music New York, among others, and was a founding member of the viol consort Parthenia. She spent three years touring with the acclaimed European-based medieval ensemble, Sequentia on the medieval fiddle performing throughout Europe and North America, at festivals including, Oude Muziek - Utrecht, Bach Tage – Berlin, Alte Musik – Herne, Wratislavia Cantans - Poland, Music Before 1800, and The Vancouver Early Music Festival. Ms. Neely began playing the viol at Vassar College and continued her studies, earning an MFA in Historical Performance at Sarah Lawrence College, with additional studies in Belgium with Wieland Kuijken. She has recorded for Arabesque, Allegro, Musical Heritage, Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, Ex Cathedra, Classic Masters, Erato, Lyrichord, and Music Masters labels. Ms. Neely has been a member of the faculty at the Amherst Early Music Summer Festival, the Viola da Gamba Society of America Conclaves, and is currently on the faculty of The Brearley School where she teaches recorder and double bass and coaches an early string repertoire ensemble.
