Of Two Minds.

When Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and cello sonatas conquered Parisian taste, the city boasted its admired and unique musical character and tradition. The opera with roots in Lully and the repertory of chamber and harpsichord music boasted the subtle genius of François Couperin. Emotionally courteous and restrained music along with its gift for sensuality were at odds with the modern concertos and sonatas from Venice. But the French were besotted with the energy and passion of Italian music. Our program puts the noble expression so aligned with language of Couperin alongside the singing and emoting sonatas of Vivaldi... definitely music of two minds.
Loretta O'Sullivan, cello
Andrew Appel, harpsichord
