Abigail Karr ~ violin
Though little known today, Friedrich Hermann was a widely-regarded 19th century violinist, composer, editor, and, most importantly, educator. After completing his own studies with Felix Mendelssohn and Ferdinand David, he joined the faculty of the Gewandhaus Conservatory at age nineteen, remaining there for the next 60 years. This set of highly evocative “miniatures” for solo violin conjures a wide variety of images and affects, appealing in particular to students and children, as well as the young at heart.
Noted for “balancing passion with precision” and “intrepid” leadership, Abigail Karr appears in a variety of ensembles, including the Handel and Haydn Society of Boston and Tempesta di Mare of Philadelphia. With keyboardist Yi-heng Yang, she has recorded Mendelssohn’s complete works for violin and piano; the album is the first period-instrument recording of this repertoire, and has been praised for “set[ting] a standard for performers, instruments, and recording technique”. Abigail is a faculty member at the Lucy Moses School, and participates in “Concerts in Motion” — an organization which brings live in-home concerts to New York’s most vulnerable residents.
