Trained in art by her father, raped as a teenager, Artemisia survived a sensational trial to become an internationally renowned painter, and the secret lover of a Florentine nobleman. Artemisia is portrayed by singer/actress Sarah Chalfy, with libretto by playwright Nahma Sandrow, baroque music by Barbara Strozzi, and staging by Paul Peers.

More magnificent Monteverdi from ARTEK! A monumental Mass of the early baroque master, Claudio Monteverdi, together with Christmas and Marian motets and instrumental music by Monteverdi, Gabrieli, and others in the grand concerted style of Venetian music for the great holidays of the church. Sixteen singers and sixteen instrumentalists will perform under the direction of Gwendolyn Toth using improvised ornamentation on the cutting edge of historical performance practice. Music includes not only the Missa in Illo Tempore of 1610, the companion piece published with Monteverdi’s Vespers, but also Monteverdi’s splendid Gloria a 7, grand sinfonias, echo music, polychoral spatial music, and haunting florid solos, all in the glorious acoustics at Church of St. Mary the Virgin.

Musicologist Jeffrey Kurtzman, who has collaborated in selecting the music for this concert, will give a pre-concert talk on the vocal/instrumental performance practice of Italian masses in Monteverdi’s time, including their incorporation of non-liturgical motets and instrumental music, as you will experience in the concert itself. HUNTING WITH BACH
Hunt Cantata & Brandenburg Concerto no. 1

The music of Johann Sebastian Bach never fails to inspire and uplift us, whether intended for the church or the court. ARTEK presents a program of the celebratory secular cantata BWV 208 "Was mir behagt, ist nur die muntre Jagd," known as the Hunt Cantata, and the splendid Brandenburg Concerto no. 1, two works that display the baroque horn. The Hunt Cantata features soprano Laurie Heimes as Diana, goddess of the hunt; soprano Clara Rottsolk as Pales, goddess of the flocks; bass-baritone Peter Becker as Pan, god of rustic nature; and tenor Andrew Fuchs as the handsome young shepherd Endymion. ARTEK will also perform the birthday aria rediscovered in 2005, "Alles mit Gott und nichts ohn' ihn," BWV 1127, written for the birthday of Duke Wilhelm Ernst of Saxe-Weimar in 1713.

Stylus fantasticus, marked by its improvisatory freedom within the bounds of a rhetorical structure, found its highest expression in the works of Dietrich Buxtehude. The powerful burghers of the Free City of Lübeck enjoyed a lively intellectual and cultural life with frequent concerts; Buxtehude’s stylus fantasticus chamber music truly flourished in this free-spirited Hanseatic atmosphere of innovative musical expression. Four virtuoso performers – Cynthia Freivogel, violin, Arnie Tanimoto, viola da gamba, Daniel Swenberg, theorbo, and Gwendolyn Toth, harpsichord – bring you an evening of exceptional baroque chamber music.
