Voice and harp lessons with Zoe Vandermeer

Zoe Vandermeer is a dramatic coloratura soprano and triple harpist and teaches singing, historical and lever harps.

For singers, she provides comprehensive in-depth vocal training and vocal coaching, specializing in baroque, classical, bel canto, as well as contemporary solo and choral repertoire. Zoe is dedicated to helping singers find their real voice, establishing vocal freedom resulting in enhanced artistic expression through developing reliable vocal techniques and observing vocal health. She gives masterclasses in diction, intonation, and ornamentation.

For harpists, Ms. Vandermeer teaches beginning to advanced historical harp and lever harp techniques, ornamentation, music theory, and repertoire. She gives masterclasses in the art of self-accompanying, and a harpist's guide to accompanying singers.

Ms. Vandermeer is a prize-winning graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, was named to the Roster of the CT Commission on Culture and Tourism in 2011 and debuted in Carnegie Hall as First Place Winner of the B. Alexander International Vocal Competition in 2014. She has given concerts accompanying her singing on triple harp at the International Festival de Deia Spain, American Harp Society, Glasgow International Early Music Festival, Rio International Harp Festival Brasil, American Swedish Historical Museum Philadelphia, and GEMS Midtown Concert Series. Ms. Vandermeer is a member of the New York Singing Teachers Association, Early Music America, American Harp Society, and Historical Harp Society.

Hidden River Press announces the publication of The Secret Music at Tordesillas, a novel in which Early Music plays a starring role. Set in the early years of the Spanish Inquisition, the story follows a young Granadan oud player of Jewish descent who becomes a court vihuelist for Juana I of Castile, the queen known to history as “Juana la Loca.” Inspired by the 1990 album by La Nef, Music for Joan the Mad, the novel explores the subversive power of music in a tumultuous and terrifying era — one that bears a striking resemblance to our own historical moment. The Secret Music at Tordesillas is available for order through independent bookstores as well as larger online booksellers. The author, Marjorie Sandor, has published five previous books of fiction and nonfiction, and was the 2004 winner of the National Jewish Book Award in Fiction. She has written frequently for Opera News on the relationship between music and literature.

While your weekly choral or early music singing groups are on hiatus, it’s so important to keep singing—even a short daily practice session can keep your voice in shape. I can help you with customized vocal exercises drawn from historical vocal methods. I’m offering half-hour weekly voice lessons online via FaceTime or Zoom. Recorder, traverso, and modern flute lessons with Deborah Booth

In the spirit of our times I am offering on-line lessons for recorder, traverso (baroque flute), and modern flute. Daytime or evening sessions are available. I will be using Zoom, FaceTime, and Skype platforms depending on each student’s needs and equipment. I’m feeling very grateful in these mysterious times, for our many choices of virtual technology!

Students at all levels are welcome.
It’s nice to have a musical focus during uncertain months.

Beyond Bach and Vivaldi
Rare Unaccompanied Works for the Baroque Violin

Though Bach’s set of six Sonatas and Partitas represents the pinnacle of writing for the solo violin, the Baroque repertoire was rich in compositions for the unaccompanied violin, much of which remains little explored. On this recording Augusta McKay Lodge, hailed as ‘the real thing, a true virtuoso’ (Seen and Heard), explores masters of the genre such as Biber, Locatelli and Pisendel but delves deeper to include the impassioned works of Nicola Matteis, the Franco-Italian warmth of Thomas Baltzar and a series of other long-overshadowed works by their contemporaries.

Brian KayEarly plucked instrument lessons with Brian Kay: Lute, Theorbo, Oud, Lyre, Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque

If you are looking to expand your knowledge and abilities on an instrument, or playing one for the first time, you can study with GRAMMY award winner Brian Kay. Brian Kay is a modern-day troubadour. He is the first Artistic Leadership Fellow of Apollo's Fire and in 2019, he won a Grammy Award for his work on their Songs of Orpheus recording. He has performed throughout the world at venues such as the National Concert Hall of Dublin, Belfast Castle (Ireland), Carnegie Hall, and the Kennedy Center. His live radio appearances include NPR, Baltimore's WYPR, Baltimore's 98ROCK, Boston's WGBH, and Cleveland's WCLV. He has recorded with record labels Avie and Sono Luminus and has appeared on more than 10 album releases which include original, early music, folk, traditional sephardic, chamber and orchestral.

As a professor, Brian teaches at Cleveland Institute of Music and Case Western Reserve University. He has lectured on music and history at Yale University, The Peabody Conservatory, Johns Hopkins University, The Maltz Center, the Folger Theater, the Kennedy Center, and Baldwin-Wallace College. He was Artist in Residence at the Cushman School in Miami and has done outreach for elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and prisons across the country.
