Join us for both evenings to hear the full range of Monteverdi's genius! ARTEK has been recording this repertoire since spring 2017 and will finish the recording just prior to these concerts.
The ensemble features our singers Laurie Heimes, soprano; Clara Rottsolk, soprano; Barbara Hollinshead, mezzo-soprano; Ryland Angel, countertenor/tenor; Andrew Fuchs, tenor; Philip Anderson, tenor; Peter Becker, bass-baritone and ARTEK's string ensemble led by world-renowned Italian violinist Enrico Gatti with Vita Wallace, violin; Theresa Salomon, viola; John Moran, bass violin; Rosamund Morley, viola da gamba; Lisa Terry, viola da gamba; Motomi Igarashi, violone, and ARTEK's renowned continuo team, Daniel Swenberg, theorbo and guitar; Grant Herreid, lute and theorbo; Adam Cockerham, theorbo; Christa Patton, harp; Dongsok Shin, harpsichord; and Gwendolyn Toth, harpsichord and director.

ARTEK's Madrigal Madness is back this month!
Wednesday, May 15 at 7 pm: Luzzaschi Madrigals
Wednesday, May 22 at 7 pm: Rossi Madrigals
17 Frost Gallery
17 Frost Street, Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Madrigal Madness is an ongoing project bringing together ARTEK's seasoned professionals with young artists in the preparation of a madrigal program - often featuring rarely heard madrigal gems.
For 2019, Program 1 will be the virtuosic madrigals for 2 & 3 voices by Luzzasco Luzzaschi (c.1545-1607) who wrote music for the famed Three Ladies of Ferrara. Clara Rottsolk, ARTEK soprano and vocal coach will join with participants Anastasia Black, Brooke Bryant, Emily Hughes, Abra Mueller, Addy Sterrett and ARTEK director Gwendolyn Toth to bring you a slice of Ferrara's fascinating court life.
Program 2 will be the virtually unknown Canzone de' Baci madrigal cycle of Salamone Rossi (c.1570-1630). Rossi was a colleague of Monteverdi at the Mantuan court, and like his colleague, Rossi's madrigals were masterpieces of expressive text-painting. The cycle consists of eight 5-part madrigals set to poems by Giambattista Marino on courtly love and kisses. Barbara Hanning, musicologist, will be on hand to give us her insight into the historical and poetic context of each madrigal. ARTEK singers and coaches Barbara Hollinshead, Andrew Fuchs, and Peter Becker will join with participants Tracy Cowart, Garrett Eucker, Barbara Hill, Bradley King, Jonathan May, Brian Mummert, and Brianna Robinson.

Fit for a King: The Musical Offering of J. S. Bach
Thursday, April 25 at 8 pm
Holy Trinity Church
Central Park West and West 65th Street
Upper West Side, NYC
In 1747, J. S. Bach met with Frederick the Great of Prussia and was put to a challenge by the king: improvise a 3-voice fugue on the Thema Regium, or "theme of the King". Bach complied with great success, whereupon the King commanded a 6-voice fugue! Bach returned home and completed not only the 6-voice fugue but also a collection of canons and a Sonata on the Royal Subject, and published the collection as the Musical Offering. Come experience the musical glory of the Prussian court as Cynthia Freivogel, violin; Teresa Salomon, violin & viola; Immanuel Davis, flute; Arnie Tanimoto, viola da gamba; and Gwendolyn Toth, harpsichord perform the entire collection: ricercares in 3 and 6 parts, trio sonata in four movements, and ten inventive, puzzling, and astounding canons, in a splendid celebration of Bach’s contrapuntal genius.

Regular seats $30/S25 (Seniors/under 25)
