Bach’s Star Pupil Meets a Bohemian Virtuoso.
Melanie Williams ~ Baroque flute
Rebecca Pechefsky ~ harpsichord
When Bach’s pupil Johann Ludwig Krebs applied for the position of court organist in Altenburg in 1756, he was auditioned by Georg Benda, Kapellmeister to Duke Friedrich III of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. We don’t know exactly how often Krebs and Benda worked together but collaboration seems likely. This program will contrast their two styles and show how they may have influenced each other.
The Williams-Pechefsky duo is a subset of Brooklyn Baroque. Flutist Melanie Williams fell in love with the one-keyed Baroque flute as a sophomore at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and followed early music to New York City. Harpsichordist Rebecca Pechefsky is a founding member of Brooklyn Baroque and is thrilled to welcome Melanie to the ensemble.
