An instrumental exploration of Medieval chant melodies as well as early polyphony with texts predominantly related to “Stella” — the image of the Star — be it in reference to the Virgin Mary, or the beloved in the context of courtly love. These selections are complemented with instrumental dances from the 13th to 15th Centuries. The instruments for this program span the gamut from recorders (including a reconstruction of a double recorder inspired by 14th-century iconography) to pipe and tabor, Medieval bells, hurdy-gurdy, organetto, and percussion.
The Lost Mode is an ensemble dedicated to the creative reimagining of music from the Middle Ages and early Renaissance, as well as related modal traditions. Founded and directed by recorder player and multi-instrumentalist Annette Bauer, the ensemble explores repertoire from the 12th through early 16th centuries, placing Medieval and early Renaissance dances side by side with instrumental interpretations of texted music and improvisations based on Medieval melodies.
