VOX: Instrumental Song in 17th Century France and Italy
October 21, 2017 7:30pm
St. Bart’s Chapel
I often encounter baroque composers, theorists, and musicians writing about poetry. The instrumentalists seem especially focused on this - everyone performs to share something, but for those of us who can’t speak on stage, the desire to communicate is even stronger. Flutists spent centuries playing Italian madrigals and French songs; to me it seems that they all just wanted to sing. I’m excited to join them, and my friend Elliot Figg on harpsichord (with a surprise guest), to share some beautiful 17th century music and poetry. We’ll be playing pieces ranging from Giulio Caccini’s love songs and Sebastien de Brossard’s shepherds’ laments, to instrumental compositions of Nicolas de Grigny and Nicola Matteis. It’s all music that yearns to speak, to communicate - so I hope you’ll enjoy what we have to say.
